Troubleshooting a Square POS system can range from a quick app restart to a deep hardware reset. Use this guide to identify and resolve the most common issues.
Before diving into specific hardware issues, ensure the basics are covered. These steps resolve roughly 80% of software-related glitches.
Check for Updates: Ensure the Square app and your deviceโs OS (iOS/Android) are running the latest versions.
The Power Cycle: Close the app, turn the device off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
Check Permissions: Go to your device settings and ensure Bluetooth, Location Services, and Microphone (for magstripe readers) are enabled for the Square app.
Internet Stability: Perform a speed test. Square recommends a connection of at least 25 Mbps for reliable software updates and syncing.
If your reader isn't pairing or keeps disconnecting:
Reset the Reader: Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds. The lights will flash orange, then red; release the button once they stop.
Clear Bluetooth Cache: "Forget" the reader in your device's Bluetooth settings, toggle Bluetooth OFF/ON, and then re-pair through the Square App (not the device's Bluetooth menu).
Interference: Move the reader at least 3 feet away from other Bluetooth devices or large metal objects.
Non-Responsive Screen: For the Register, unplug the customer-facing display and plug it back in. Ensure the USB-C cable is seated firmly.
Software Freeze: Hold the power button for 15 seconds until the Square logo appears.
Printer/Cash Drawer: If the drawer won't open, ensure the receipt printer has a "Printer Profile" enabled in Settings > Hardware > Printers. The drawer is triggered by the printer's signal.
As of March 2026, Square has updated its Offline Mode policies.
Syncing Delay: If transactions aren't showing in your Dashboard, check More > Settings > Hardware > Network to see if you are in an "Offline Session."
The 24-Hour Rule: You must reconnect to the internet within 24 hours to process offline payments, or the transactions will expire and you will not be paid.
Do Not Delete the App: Never sign out or delete the Square app while you have "Pending" offline payments, or you will lose that data permanently.
Here is a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to get your Square kiosk back up and running.
Before diving into settings, ensure the hardware is physically sound.
Check the Connection: Ensure the iPad is firmly seated in the Square Stand or kiosk mount. If using a Square Reader, ensure itโs fully plugged into the lightning/USB-C port or the headphone jack.
Power Supply: Verify the power cable is plugged into a grounded outlet. Square Stands require active power to charge the iPad and power USB accessories.
Clean the Connectors: Dust or lint in the charging port can prevent the iPad from "talking" to the Stand. Use compressed air or a toothpick to gently clean the port.
The iPad's OS can often interfere with how Square operates in a public-facing environment.
Guided Access: If the kiosk is "stuck" or won't let you switch apps, triple-click the Home button (or Top button on newer iPads) to manage Guided Access.
Bluetooth & Wi-Fi: * Toggle Bluetooth Off and On again if your card reader isn't connecting.
Ensure the iPad is on a stable, private network. Public Wi-Fi often has "splash pages" that disconnect Square.
Background App Refresh: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and ensure it is ON for Square.
If the app is lagging, crashing, or refusing to take payments:
Issue
Solution
Reader Not Detected
Disconnect the reader, go to Settings > Hardware > Card Readers in the Square app, and "Forget" the device. Re-pair it from scratch.
App Freezing
Force quit the app (swipe up from the bottom and flick the Square app away) and restart it.
Offline Mode
If payments aren't processing, check if you have Offline Mode enabled. Note: Offline payments expire if not uploaded within 24 hours.
Update Required
Visit the App Store. Square frequently pushes updates that fix communication bugs between the iPad and the hardware.
To prevent customers from "escaping" the app or changing settings, check these specific kiosk configurations:
Auto-Lock: Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and set it to Never.
Screen Rotation: Ensure the screen is locked in the orientation your kiosk mount requires.
Square Kiosk Settings: Inside the Square app, go to Settings > Checkout > Kiosk Settings to ensure your menu and "Timeout" durations are set correctly.
If none of the above works, perform these steps in order:
Force Restart the iPad: (Volume up, Volume down, hold Power button until the Apple logo appears).
Unplug/Replug the Square Stand from its power source.
Re-seat the iPad into the Stand.
Note: If you see a "Liquid Detected" or "Accessory Not Supported" error, this usually indicates a damaged cable or a faulty pin inside the Square Stand connector.
Identify your model by the port on the back and follow the corresponding steps:
TSP143III LAN (Ethernet):
The "IP Check": Turn the printer OFF. Hold the FEED button and turn it back ON. It will print two strips. Look at the bottom of the second strip for the IP Address.
The Fix: If it says 192.168.x.x, ensure your iPad/Register is on the same Wi-Fi network. If it says 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.x.x, the printer isn't "talking" to your router. Swap the Ethernet cable or restart your router.
TSP143III BI (Bluetooth):
Force Pairing: If itโs not connecting, press and hold the PAIR button on the back for 5 seconds until the blue light flashes. Find "Star Micronics" in your iPadโs Bluetooth Settings and pair it there first.
Auto-Connect: In the Square app, go to Settings > Hardware > Printers > [Your Printer] and ensure Auto-Connect is toggled ON.
TSP143III U (USB):
The "Lightning" Trick: This model allows you to plug an iPad charging cable directly into the back of the printer. If itโs not printing, ensure the iPad is actually charging. If itโs not charging, the printer isn't sending data. Try a different Apple-certified cable.
If the hardware is connected but the paper isn't moving or the lights are flashing:
Solid Red Error - Out of Paper: Replace the roll (must be Thermal Paper).
Flashing Red Error - Overheated or Jam: Turn off for 10 minutes. Check for stuck paper bits near the cutter.
No Lights at All - Power Issue: Ensure the physical switch on the left side is flipped ON and the power cord is pushed firmly into the base.
The TSP100 series is a Thermal Printer. It uses heat, not ink.
Problem: The printer "ghost prints" (moves the paper, but it's blank).
Fix: Scratch the paper with your fingernail. If it leaves a black mark, that is the "active" side. Ensure that side is facing UP as it feeds out of the printer.
Even if the printer is perfect, Square needs to know how to use it.
Delete the Ghost: In Square, go to Settings > Hardware > Printers. If you see multiple "TSP100" entries, delete them all.
Create a New Station: Tap Create Printer Station.
The "Test Print": Once you name it, tap Test Print.
No print? The issue is the physical connection (check cables).
Test prints, but no receipts? You haven't toggled the Receipts switch to ON in that printer's profile.
Because boba shops use syrups and powders, the TSP654IISK (Sticky model) is prone to "gumming up."
The "Syrup Snag": Open the printer cover. Look at the Cutter Blade. If you see a buildup of adhesive or dried syrup, the blade will stick, causing a "Cutter Error" (Flashing Red Light).
Fix: Clean the blade and the surrounding plastic with a 70% Isopropyl Alcohol wipe. Wait for it to dry completely before closing.
The Paper Direction: Sticky paper only has the adhesive coating on one side. If itโs upside down, it won't print and might stick to the internal rollers.
The Sensor Eye: There is a small black mark sensor near the feed roller. If a piece of a label has peeled off and covered it, the printer will keep feeding paper forever without stopping.
The Star 650 series usually connects via Bluetooth (BI) or Ethernet (LAN).
If the Square iPad says "Printer Disconnected":
Turn the printer OFF.
On the back of the printer, find the PAIR button.
Turn the printer ON while holding the PAIR button until the blue light flashes.
On your iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and "Forget" the Star Micronics device.
Re-pair it in the Bluetooth menu, then return to the Square App to add it back to your Printer Stations.
If your printer is plugged into your router:
Perform a Self-Test: Turn the printer OFF. Hold the FEED button and turn it back ON.
Wait for the long strip to print. Look at the bottom for the IP Address.
If the IP starts with 169.254, it has failed to connect to your network. Check your Ethernet cable ๐.
For a boba shop, your "Label" printer needs specific settings to handle individual cup stickers.
Go to: More > Settings > Hardware > Printers.
Select your Star 650.
Toggle ON "In-Person Order Tickets".
Crucial Step: Toggle ON "Single Item Per Ticket".
Why? If a customer orders 4 boba teas, this setting ensures the printer cuts 4 separate stickers (one for each cup) rather than one long strip of 4 drinks.
Receipts: Usually, you want "Receipts" toggled OFF for this specific printer so you don't waste expensive sticky paper on customer receipts.
Solid Red (Error) - Out of Paper: Replace the roll. Ensure itโs "Linerless Sticky" paper.
Flashing Red (Quick) - Paper Jam / Cutter: Open the lid, clear any stuck labels, and reset the cutter.
Flashing Red (Slow) - Overheated: The "High-Volume" boba rush can overheat the head. Let it rest for 5 mins.
No Lights - Power Issue: Check the power brick under the counter. Ensure the side switch is ON."
